The Kazan Mother of God
about
Out Of was founded by Elizaveta Kolesova, who has long
been passionate about collecting. Over the years, the project
has been enriched with objects whose lives had
already been cut short – porcelain interwoven with wire,
a clay jug held together with iron staples,
and wooden tableware bound with leather straps.
The value lay not in perfection, but in the way
the signs of use had left their mark.

background
The idea for the project was sparked by the question:
there so many contemporary projects about vintage clothing,
but hardly anything about objects? You could either
go to a market, where you’d have to spend several hours
in twenty-degree frost in winter to find something,
or to a posh antique shop, which is daunting to walk into
when you’re a poor student – there was nothing in between.
In the early stages of the project’s development, the
focus was largely on tableware and interior design items,
whilst she perceived the country’s material heritage
as limited and monotonous.
This perception was largely attributable to the historical
context of the Soviet period and cultural isolation,
under which mass-produced, standardised objects were
predominantly manufactured domestically, whilst access
to foreign works of art was severely restricted. However, as the
research into material culture deepened, the project’s focus
gradually shifted towards objects characteristic of the post-Soviet
space and Russia.
